Cemetary Sunday

In the past two years the Roman Catholic church in the Glengormley area has decided to introduce what they call," Cemetary Sunday" to Carnmoney Cemetary.

This is a ritual where local Priests bring huge numbers of their parishoners to the cemetary to visit graves and to hold a service. This is not a new thing for the R.C. church and has been happening in Milltown cemetary for years but they only now, have started it in Carnmoney and so far it has been less than a success.

Protestants in the area dont have a problem with Roman Catholics visiting their relatives graves, and nearly every Sunday of the year, the two communities mingle in the cemetary as they pay their respects, but Cemetary Sunday has become a day where no Protestants, can visit graves.

Firstly the sight of Hundreds of Roman Catholics, standing in the middle of the Graveyard, saying hail Mary's may be intimidating enough, but what makes it even worse is the amount of hangers on who come with them and stand around in their Celtic and Rep.of Ireland shirts, not taking part in the service, but being there because they see it as some sort of victory over the "Prods".

This year it has become even more clear that Protestants where not wanted, when P.S.N.I. officers stood at the gates of the Cemetary and refused entry to people comming from the O'neills Rd. entrance simply because they where not the right religion to be there that day.

This website feels that the R.C. Church should disband this policy immediately so that people of all religions, colours and creeds can visit their loved ones graves on any day of the year, free from intimidation or harrassment and before it turns into a political football.

On Sunday 16th June the Rep. of Ireland played Spain in a second round World Cup match. The match itself was a great occasion and the Irish team clawed back a 1-0 deficit to take the match to extra time and penalties where they lost in the shoot-out. As usual their supporters where in great spirits and even after a game they should have won, their fans where well behaved and a credit to their country.

In Glengormley, Rep. of Ireland fans had taken over what is nomally a mixed pub and watched the match while having a few pints. When the match was over and the result had not gone their way they decided to go and attack protestants with hammers and hatchets. As they made their way through the the town centre they came across a small group of Protestant teenagers and launched their attack. They also tried to climb lamposts to take down flags which had been erected for the Queens Golden Jubilee. Of course when the Police arrived they didnt try to arrest this scum, but started to intimidate local protestants who had come to aid the young teenagers under attack.
